Eton specifically
Eton is a small Murray County town just north of Chatsworth on US 411, sitting right at the foot of the Cohutta range. The carpet industry shaped the housing here the way it did across this whole corner of the state, which means compact lots and a lot of detached storage buildings holding more than anyone planned.
Eton exists because of the railroad. The Louisville and Nashville came up through Murray County in 1906 and the towns along it were platted the way railroad towns always were, a tight grid either side of the line with narrow lots running a long way back from the street. That shape is still the defining fact of a job here. The house is close to the road and the accumulation is at the far end of the yard, a hundred and fifty feet away, behind whatever has been parked there since. East of town the pavement gives out and the road toward Holly Creek and the national forest turns to gravel, which is where the hunting camps and the outdoor gear live.
Getting a trailer in
On a deep narrow lot the trailer stays at the curb and the load walks. That is most of the work in the old part of Eton, and the walk is the number that moves the price. Out on the forest roads it inverts: room everywhere, surface nowhere, and a turnaround that might be a mile past whatever you came for.
Turnaround: scheduled ahead, and usually worth combining into one full load. Rome to Eton is about 54 miles by road.
What shapes a job in Eton
Eton is the last town before the mountains, and loads here often include things that were never household goods to begin with. A camp cleanout produces fuel cans, tires, a propane bottle and something on wheels that stopped moving years ago, and each of those is its own question rather than part of a general pile. Tires and anything that held fuel travel apart from the rest of the load. We tell you up front what can go on a trailer and what cannot, rather than working it out with the thing half loaded.
Questions from Eton
Everything is stacked at the back of a long lot. How does that get out?
On foot, mostly. Where a truck cannot reach the pile, we bring the pile to the truck, and that walk sits in the number rather than hiding in it. If there is a side gate, an alley, or a neighbor willing to let a trailer stand for an hour, say so when you call. It can change what you pay.
There is an old camper sitting in the yard. Can it go?
Usually, though it takes a conversation first. A camper means paperwork, four rotten tires and a shell that either comes apart or rolls, and which of those applies changes the job completely. Send a photo of it from the side and one of the tongue and hitch.
