Garages and attics hold the heaviest material in most houses, and the least visible, which is why estimates for these jobs are wrong more often than any other kind. Paint cans, tile, lumber offcuts, tools and old equipment weigh far more than the space they occupy suggests. Attics add the further problem that everything has to come down a ladder before it goes anywhere, one armful at a time. What works is emptying the space completely, deciding what goes back in, and letting the rest leave. Sorting in place is how a Saturday disappears with the garage still full.
Worth sorting out before the day
- Empty the space first, then decide what goes back in. Sorting in place takes twice as long.
- Look up as well as around. Lumber, ladders and boxes stored in the rafters or over the garage door are what gets missed when somebody counts up a load.
- If the shelving or the workbench is going too, mention it when you book. It changes the time on site.

What about old paint and chemicals?
Those need a household hazardous waste collection rather than a trailer, so set them aside and we'll point you to where they go. It's worth doing early rather than on the day. Old paint is the most common reason a garage cleanout stalls halfway, because the cans get moved to a corner and then the whole job gets put off until somebody has time to deal with them.
Do I have to clear the attic before you get there?
No. The ladder work is part of it, and it's usually the part that takes longest.
