Ringgold specifically
Ringgold is the Catoosa County seat just off I-75 near the Tennessee line, a small town serving as a Chattanooga bedroom community.
April 27, 2011 split the housing stock in two. The tornado came through west of downtown and over Taylor Ridge, and it damaged or destroyed several hundred buildings across the county. What replaced them went up fast and mostly at once, so Ringgold now carries a large block of houses all the same age, reaching the same maintenance point together. Roofing, decking and flooring come off them in waves instead of one at a time. Around that block sits everything the storm missed: the 1849 depot and the old commercial row, and pre-war houses with the basements and outbuildings to match. Two very different piles, sometimes on the same street.
Getting a trailer in
Arriving is the easy half. The interstate puts a trailer at the edge of town in minutes. Then the ridge takes over. The gap east of downtown is the only sensible way through, and the neighborhoods climbing the slopes on either side of it have drives that are short, steep, and inclined to turn back on themselves right at the garage.
Turnaround: scheduled ahead, and usually worth combining into one full load. Rome to Ringgold is about 55 miles by road.
What shapes a job in Ringgold
The commute is what turns a small job into a stalled one. If your working day ends across the state line, the window for loading a truck, driving somewhere, unloading it and getting back has closed before you reach it, and the pile sits for another month. The ridge does not help, since the direct route and the practical route are seldom the same. Most of the time the pile ends up waiting for somebody who already owns a trailer.
Questions from Ringgold
We both commute to Chattanooga and are only home on weekends. How does that work?
It works if we set the date early. Ringgold is a long run north for us, so a Saturday here goes on the calendar the week before. Calling that morning will not do it. Give us a couple of dates that would suit and we take the earlier one.
Our house is one of the ones rebuilt after the tornado. Does newer construction change anything?
Not for the hauling. It changes what comes out. A house finished in 2012 gives you shingles, decking, laminate and cabinet carcasses instead of sixty years of stored boxes, and that kind of load runs heavier per cubic foot than people expect from something that still looks like clean lumber.
How soon can you get to Ringgold?
Scheduled ahead, and usually worth combining into one full load. At about 55 road miles Ringgold sits at the edge of what we cover, so the more notice you give us the better.
