What this job is actually like

Carpet fools people at both ends. A dry room rolls up into something two people can carry out, and the same room after a leak is a different job altogether, because carpet and pad hold water the way a sponge does and don't give it back. Wet is usually the reason it's coming out at all. The other half of the work is underneath it: tack strip around every edge, staples through the pad every few inches, glue if it went down on a slab. Pulling the carpet up is the quick bit. The strip and the staples are the afternoon, and skipping them only moves the work to whoever lays the next floor. Carpet is awkward once it's off the floor, too. A full roll of it is heavy, floppy and the wrong shape for every doorway in the house, so it gets cut into strips a person can actually carry rather than wrestled out in one piece. Wet carpet is worse again, because it holds its water the whole way to the trailer and gives it back on the hallway floor.

Worth sorting out before the day

• Get the furniture out first if you can, or tell us what needs moving. Emptying the room is usually the slowest part of the day.
• Say up front whether it got wet. That changes the weight, the smell and how soon it needs doing.
• Check whether the pad is stapled to plywood or glued to a slab. Glue is a different job and it shows up in the time on site.
• If the water came from a sewer line, or the carpet has been wet long enough to smell, a remediation crew goes in ahead of us. Pulling it up too early just spreads it around the house.
• Decide whether the tack strip stays or goes. If new carpet is going straight back down, sometimes it stays, and that's worth settling before anybody starts pulling.
