What this job is actually like

Metal is the material where the trailer looks half empty and the scale disagrees. A stack of angle iron, a couple of water heaters and a dead riding mower can outweigh a trailer packed to the rails with furniture, and disposal follows the scale every time, which is why a metal job prices differently than it looks like it should. Where it goes is its own question, because metal rarely travels with the rest of a load. It gets separated as it's loaded and goes to a scrap buyer rather than to a disposal site, which makes it the one category here where the material has a value at the far end instead of a cost. That only holds if it actually gets separated. A pile of clean metal is worth something to a yard. The same metal buried in a trailer of household junk is worth nothing to anybody, because nobody is going to dig it back out again.

Worth sorting out before the day

• Pull the clean metal into its own pile if you have time. It loads faster and it's the part that carries value.
• Drain anything that held fuel or oil, and say what it was. A mower or a generator with fuel still in it is a different conversation.
• Mention refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners separately. Those get set apart as we load, because the refrigerant comes out of them before the shell is any use as scrap.
• Say if it's behind the building or out in a field. Scrap almost never lives at the road, and the carry is usually the longest part of a metal job.
