Nelson specifically
Nelson straddles the Pickens and Cherokee county line on GA 108, in the marble belt that gave this part of Georgia its quarries. Houses sit on generous lots along winding two-lane roads, and the stone underfoot means a lot of properties carry retaining walls, old steps, and hardscape that eventually has to be broken up and hauled off.
The railroad reached the marble belt in 1883 and Nelson was incorporated eight years later, entirely because there was stone here worth moving. That trade set the pattern for what leaves a property now. Stone gets reused, repositioned and eventually abandoned, so a yard rebuild here starts by breaking out whatever somebody else laid forty years ago. Away from the stone the land runs to small farms and never to subdivisions, and the barns, corn cribs and equipment sheds on them are older than the houses in front of them. Nelson is one of only three incorporated towns in the whole county, which tells you how rural the surrounding address book is.
Getting a trailer in
The entrances are the pinch point. Old marble-belt properties tend to have a narrow drive between stone posts, built when a car was six feet wide, and a culvert over a ditch that nobody has inspected in years. Once you are in there is usually plenty of room to work. Getting a loaded dual-axle trailer back out past those posts is the part we check first.
Turnaround: scheduled ahead, and usually worth combining into one full load. Rome to Nelson is about 55 miles by road.
What shapes a job in Nelson
A stone load behaves nothing like a household one. It fills a trailer by weight while it still looks half empty, which is precisely backward from what anyone expects after watching a couch go in, and a yard of old hardscape can be two trips even though it would fit in one by volume. Stone also comes out a piece at a time. It cannot be dragged, shoveled or thrown, so the walk from the wall to the trailer is most of the labor and the distance between them is most of the price.
Questions from Nelson
We are taking out an old stone wall. Do you break it up as well as haul it?
We break it out and take it away in the same visit. What sets the price is weight and how far each piece has to travel to reach the trailer, because stone comes out a piece at a time and cannot be dragged or shoveled. A wall that looks modest can outweigh a house full of furniture.
The drive in runs between two old stone posts. Will a trailer fit?
That is the first thing we check here. Marble-belt properties tend to have an entrance built when a car was six feet wide, and a culvert over the ditch that nobody has looked at in years. Once we are past those there is usually plenty of room to work. Measure between the posts, and send a photograph of the culvert while you are out there.
