What this job is actually like

Green waste is usually cheaper to get rid of than household junk, because clean yard material is handled separately from mixed household waste and priced accordingly. The catch is water. Freshly cut material holds a great deal of it and is far heavier than the same pile after a few months of drying, so a brush pile that has sat since last year costs less to take away than the identical pile cut last week. The other catch is shape. A brush pile is mostly air, so it looks like an enormous job from the kitchen window and loads down to a great deal less than it looked, while a stack of old landscaping timbers looks like nothing at all and reaches the trailer's weight on its own. We don't fell or top standing trees, so what goes on the trailer is what's already down or already cut.

Worth sorting out before the day

• Keep the brush clear of household trash. One bag of garbage through the pile turns clean yard waste into a mixed load, and a mixed load is a more expensive load.
• Stack it in one place a trailer can reach if you can. Debris scattered across five acres is mostly walking.
• If a tree crew is coming, ask them to stack what they cut rather than scatter it.
• A pile that has dried for a season is lighter than one cut last week, and lighter costs less.
