The appliance nobody will take is one of the most familiar problems in this area. Anything holding refrigerant, so refrigerators, freezers and window air conditioning units, needs that refrigerant recovered by someone certified before the appliance can be scrapped or disposed of. That is a step a homeowner has no way to do and no disposal site will skip, which is how a dead chest freezer, an ordinary object in any garage, ends up sitting there long after everything around it has been dealt with. Large furniture is a different problem. It isn't restricted, just heavy, awkward, and frequently assembled inside the room it now has to leave.

Worth sorting out before the day

• Mention the fridge, the freezer or the window air conditioner first. Anything holding refrigerant has to have it recovered by somebody certified, so it takes a different route than the rest of the load.
• Pianos, safes and hot tubs need equipment and more than one person. They're the items that hurt people.
• Measure the doorway on anything that was assembled in the room. Some of it comes apart and some of it doesn't.
• You don't need to get it to the curb. The curb was never the hard part of this.
