An above-ground pool comes apart quicker than people expect and produces more than they expect, and nearly all of that gap is the sand. The liner sits on a bed of it, several inches deep across the whole footprint, and it never gets counted by anyone estimating the job by looking at the pool. A pool whose walls two people can carry out piece by piece is sitting on several tons of sand. It matters because sand isn't the same kind of waste as the pool on top of it. Sand, soil, rock and brick are inert material, and inert material is disposed of more cheaply than mixed construction waste is. Run the two together and the whole load gets handled as the expensive kind, so the sand comes off as its own load rather than going on top of the liner and the framing. That only works if the separating happens in the yard, while there is still room to put things in two places.

Worth sorting out before the day

• Drain it well ahead of the day, and think about where the water goes. A slope toward a neighbor is a problem you don't want to invent.
• Say what condition the liner is in. One that has gone brittle in the sun sheds in strips instead of coming out whole, and clearing those off the sand adds time.
• Say whether the deck, the ladder and the surround are coming out too. That's often as much material as the pool itself.
• Tell us how deep the sand is if you know. It sits several inches thick across the whole footprint, it outweighs the pool on top of it, and it decides how many trips this takes.
