Talc built the working end of this town. The mines were up on Fort and Cohutta mountains and the mills were down here, so the industrial fringe east of the courthouse is a century of grinding, bagging and hauling stone powder, and what got left behind it is heavy. Above town, GA 52 climbs into the state park and the ridge road is lined with cabins, rentals and retirement houses that were built to look at a view rather than to be emptied. Being the county seat piles the ordinary courthouse-town business on top: offices, rentals, and property changing hands.
