Waleska specifically
Waleska is a small Cherokee County town built around Reinhardt University, reached on GA 108 and GA 140 through rolling country north of Canton, with Lake Arrowhead just up the road. The mix is unusual for a town this size: a compact campus core, older houses close in, and gated lake-community streets a few minutes away where we need real room to turn a truck and trailer around.
Waleska runs on two things with almost nothing in common. Reinhardt University has been here since 1883 and its calendar sets the rhythm in the middle of town, which means dorm and rental turnover that arrives in bursts and never as a steady trickle. A few minutes up the road is Lake Arrowhead, a gated community built around a 540-acre private lake laid out in the early 1970s as a mountain retreat, now thousands of wooded acres with better than twenty miles of shoreline. Those cabins are fifty years old. The work there is wood stoves, dock boards, boat gear, cabin furniture and deck lumber, and none of it resembles a suburban garage.
Getting a trailer in
The lake community is gated, so a truck and trailer need clearing at the gate before anything begins, and there are hours when contractor traffic is expected. Roads inside drop toward the water in tight switchbacks with short, steep driveways hanging off them. In town the problem inverts: small older lots with very little turning room.
Turnaround: scheduled, usually within a few days. Rome to Waleska is about 42 miles by road.
What shapes a job in Waleska
Doing it yourself from a lake property takes longer than the map suggests. The drive out of the community winds before it reaches anything straight, the grades are steep enough that a loaded trailer behaves differently coming back up, and the loads themselves are awkward, with nothing boxed: dock boards, boat gear, wood stoves, deck lumber. From town the geography is kinder but the volume off a term-end clearout lands all at once, which is its own kind of problem.
Questions from Waleska
Can you get through the gate at Lake Arrowhead?
You arrange that with the community rather than us at the gatehouse, so put our name down as early as you can manage. Backing a loaded trailer back out of those lake roads because a gate list never got updated is a bad afternoon for everybody involved.
What actually comes out of a fifty-year-old lake cabin?
Usually more structure than contents. Deck boards and rails, dock sections, a wood stove and its pipe, cabin furniture that was never meant to leave, and whatever is stored underneath the house. We keep treated and painted lumber separate from clean wood, so tell us what the deck was built from if anybody remembers.
How soon can you get to Waleska?
Scheduled, usually within a few days. At about 42 road miles we put Waleska on the week's schedule rather than squeezing it in.
