Canton was a cotton town long before it was a commuter town. Local money raised the mill in 1899, it opened in 1901 with a hundred and twenty-five workers, and a second one followed on the same river. The company built housing, and in the 1960s those four-room cottages were sold off to the people already living in them for around four thousand dollars apiece. Plenty of them still stand on the hillsides above the Etowah.
