Canton specifically

Canton is the Cherokee County seat on the Etowah, with an old mill core and substantial newer growth pushing out from it.

Canton was a cotton town long before it was a commuter town. Local money raised the mill in 1899, it opened in 1901 with a hundred and twenty-five workers, and a second one followed on the same river. The company built housing, and in the 1960s those four-room cottages were sold off to the people already living in them for around four thousand dollars apiece. Plenty of them still stand on the hillsides above the Etowah. Four rooms is not much house, so sixty years of ownership since has gone into back rooms added on, carports enclosed and yard buildings put up, and that is where a Canton clearance actually happens.

Getting a trailer in

The cottage streets climb away from the river, so driveways are short, steep and cut into the slope, and several will not hold a truck and a trailer at the same time. Working out of the street is normal. Up on the ridge where the newer growth is, it reverts to ordinary subdivision access.

Turnaround: scheduled ahead, and usually worth combining into one full load. Rome to Canton is about 46 miles by road.

What shapes a job in Canton

A short, steep driveway on a hillside street is the practical limit on doing this yourself in the old part of Canton. A pickup will get up there. A pickup with a trailer behind it often cannot turn around once it has, and reversing a loaded trailer back down onto a narrow street is not a skill to acquire on the day. Add the fact that a four-room cottage with two additions holds far more than its footprint implies, and the plan usually falls apart on the second load rather than the first.

Questions from Canton

The house is small but the yard buildings are full. Can that be one job?

That is the shape of a lot of properties here, so yes. A four-room cottage with two additions and a couple of sheds is one clearance to us, and we would rather quote it as one trip than piece by piece. Walk the whole property before you describe it, including whatever is sitting behind the shed.

We are on one of the streets above the river. Can a trailer get up there?

Often, and where it cannot we bring the load down to the street instead. Those hillside drives are short and steep and several were cut for one car, so it depends on yours. One photo of the drive taken from the road settles it.

How soon can you get to Canton?

Scheduled ahead, and usually worth combining into one full load. At about 46 road miles Canton sits at the edge of what we cover, so the more notice you give us the better.
